The 2010 Niagara Country Tandem Tour

Come join us for this beautiful 8-day Tandem Tour in New York’s Niagara Country. This area has Tandem friendly terrain with amazing natural beauty, including the Niagara River, Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario, and meandering rivers through oak stands. Man has also created wonderful sights to see, including Old Fort Niagara, the Erie Canal, extensive orchards, and cobblestone architecture. Enjoy visiting Genesee Country Village, the largest living history museum in New York State, with 19th century historic structures and gardens. Learn about the Underground Railroad, where communities aided fugitive slaves to reach freedom in Canada.

Day 1 Batavia, New York

Arrive at Batavia, New York and “settle in” at the Batavia Holiday Inn. Join us for a pre-dinner get together, as well as for a group dinner. If you get to the area early, you can drive to Niagara Falls or go to harness racing at Batavia Downs. Visit the Holland Land Office Museum in Batavia, where 3.3 million acres of New York State were sold in the 18th century, opening up Western New York as the breadbasket of the US.

Day 2 Batavia to Lewiston
Rides of 53, 59, or 61 Miles
Ride to Lewiston along the Niagara Escarpment. Visit Lockport, a city that grew out of the Erie Canal. Lockport’s Flight of 5 Locks, a major elevation change along the Erie Canal, is one of it’s claims to fame. Visit the Market Street Art Gallery, with 30 artist studios, the Erie Canal Discovery Center, or the Kenan Center Gallery of Art. Take a break and stop for lunch. After Lockport, you can visit local wineries that are on the Niagara Escarpment. Our destination is Lewiston, a small city with enjoyable restaurants, 18th and 19th century architecture, and lots of history. We will be staying two nights at the Portage House Motel. We’ll use their outside gazebo for our Happy Hour, weather permitting. The group dinner is just around the corner. Continental breakfast is included in our stay at the Portage House.

Day 3 Lewiston
Rides of 25, 40, 45, or 57 Miles
"Lewiston is one of the most beautiful undiscovered small towns in America", said The Discerning Traveler, 2003. Come discover Lewiston and Lake Ontario on this day of riding. Explore the orchards and farm country, with the return ride along Lake Ontario. Visit Murphy Orchards, a stop along the Underground Railroad, and now a wonderful place for lunch and for homemade jams. Visit Old Fort Niagara, the military fort of France, Britain, and the United States. This major fort was a key point for trade with the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Indian Nations, as well as a major battle site for the War of 1812. There is an optional destination Tandem ride to the American side of Niagara Falls. (Remember your passport if you want to go to the Canadian side of Niagara. Return to Lewiston and enjoy its history and shopping. Lewiston was an important last stop in the Underground Railroad, aiding thousands of fugitive slaves to reach freedom in Canada. See the Freedom Crossing Statue, unveiled in 2009 and sited by the beautiful Niagara River. Or take a day off and explore Lewiston, or take a Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour. There are numerous restaurants in Lewiston for dinner, with dinner on your own.

Day 4 Lewiston to Childs
52 mile ride
Today’s ride passes along the Niagara Escarpment, then down through orchards, horse farms, and along the Erie Canal. The terrain along the Erie Canal is very gentle and Tandem friendly. Stop by the small canal towns of Middleport and Medina for lunch and views of their working locks. Medina’s canal is along an aqueduct! Some riders might choose to ride on the Erie Canal towpath, which is a flatter packed surface that shortens the miles. We are staying two nights in the historic Tillman’s Village Inn, in Childs, New York. With the area's best restaurant and nice, large guest rooms, we will have two happy hours and group dinners here.

Day 5 Childs
Rides of 35, 44, 49, or 51 miles
The routes today go through the only road tunnel that goes under the Erie Canal (way cool!). The terrain is again gentle to rolling countryside. The rides pass through Medina, where you can visit the Medina Railroad Museum. After Medina, you have the choice of riding southerly to the Iroquois National Wildlife Region, where there are nesting American eagles and a beautiful view of the natural wetlands. Or ride north along the Oak Orchard River Valley, a scenic river that meanders towards Brown’s Berry Patch. Brown’s Berry Patch is a favorite of bikers in the area, and has great lunch foods at the Farm Grill. You can enjoy wonderful waffle cones and ice cream or shop in the Lake Country Marketplace and Gift Shop. The rides then return to Childs. This week, look for cobblestone structures as you ride along. The cobblestones were generated by glacier action. Orleans County has the largest concentration of cobblestone structures in the US, which became a prestigious building material for 19th century buildings. Visit the Cobblestone Museum in Childs (open 11 to 5).

Day 6 Childs to Mumford
Rides of 38 or 50 miles
The routes turn inland, with a longer ride passing through Batavia and on to Mumford. This gives another chance to visit the Holland Land Office Museum in Batavia. The shorter 37 mile ride goes along scenic country roads before arriving at Mumford. We will be staying at the Genesee Country Inn for two nights, where the beds are wonderful, the rooms are elegant, and the breakfast reflects the owner’s warm hospitality. Built in 1833, the Inn was a working mill for 100 years. This B&B is set on 8 acres, with a stream and walking trails running through the property. The owners are welcoming and will be creating dinners for us both nights, as well as breakfasts. Join us for Happy Hours prior to each dinner.

Day 7 Mumford
Rides of 30, 39, or 62 miles
Breakfast is included in our stay and starts us off for a great day of riding. Take the time to also visit the Genesee Country Village (the reason Lindy loves Mumford!). The Genesee Country Village is an open-air museum of 19th century culture and historic buildings (68 in all). Knowledgeable interpreters demonstrate crafts, trades, farming, and cooking daily. A half-day at this museum is a minimum; so choose the ride that lets you visit GCV. The rides include a short loop through Avon; the medium loop to Geneseo, with a local college and shopping; and the long loop around Conesus Lake to Geneseo. Join us at the Genesee Country Inn for Happy Hour and our group dinner.

Day 8 Mumford to Batavia
Rides of 22, 36, 43, or 50 miles
We are on our final day of riding, starting with another great breakfast. Two routes take us back to Batavia, where we gather to tell stories over Happy Hour and have our group dinner. We hope you have enjoyed this area as much as we do!
